About the Scholarship
Scholarship Committee
The Linda Snapp Memorial Scholarship is given to a member of the active chapter each semester. The first scholarship was awarded to Colette Escheverria Lenhoff on the night of December 2, 1989.
The scholarship is offered as a memorial to Linda Snapp a sister who pledged Phi Chi in the Fall of 1984 with the Delta pledge class and was initiated with the class.
Decemeber of that year, Linda was diagnosed with a rare muscular cancer that usually affects children. The cancer had metastasized to her bone marrow. She underwent treatment at John's Hopkins Hospital. While she was in the hospital, two sisters, Theresa Boyd and Debbie Whelan Valenza visited her very regularly.
Linda did return to school in the Spring of 1986. She was very frail and needed assistance walking. Linda and her mom, who later became an honorary member of Phi Chi drove to school and went to class. Linda always kept up her spirits.
Linda never stopped living because of her cancer. Linda had made a wish list of things she wanted to do and some of the things on the list were: Go to Disney World, ride in a hot air balloon and be the bridesmaid in her sister Kim's wedding. She did all of those things.
In April on 1986, she was even strong enough to drive a car and walk without any assistance. She even went to church hooked up to an IV.
Linda loved D Phi E. Her sister Barbara said, "D Phi E helped her feel welcome as a transfer student and gave her a sense of belonging to UMBC."
So who is Linda Snapp? She is a sister. A daughter. A sister-in-law. She's a Deepher. A friend. A nurse. But mostly a teacher.
She will forever be remembered through her life and this scholarship. Sisterhood is forever.

Monique Catalan
During ungrad, Monique was a member of the Phi Kappa pledge class. She held positions within DphiE and PHA. Now, she is in pharmacy school. She just joined a pharmacy fraternity where they raise funds for St. Jude's. She holds several leadership positions, such as a student ambassador, where she gets to continue her passion as a recruitment director. She currently lives with Jena, one of her pledge sisters. This is proof that sisterhood is more than 4 years of undergrad, it's for life.
